Alternative Jobs: U.S. Foreign Service
What do you mean by Alternative Jobs?
United States foreign service jobs lean more towards the traditional than the alternative but they do offer the benefit of living in foreign countries and learning about a culture from the inside. From time to time there are U.S. foreign service jobs available on a temporary basis which might be a welcome alternative if your main goal is world travel.
The U.S. department of state has employees in literally all countries across the globe so this makes a job with the foreign service a wonderful alternative for the traveler. Even more so for people who wish to combine travel with a traditional life with a family and mostly normal job.
Most foreign service jobs revolve around diplomacy of some sort – meaning that these are office type jobs and people with experience in office management or business management will be most qualified for many of the job opportunities with the department of state’s foreign service program. Much of the work at the entry level will revolve around solving problems for Americans abroad such as lost passports, complications resulting from marrying a foreign national etc.; as well as processing visa applications for foreigners wishing to visit the United States. Most positions will be required to obtain a department of state security clearance.
Benefits of foreign service work include excellent health coverage for the employee and their family. Dependent upon where an employee is assigned there may be other benefits as well such as gym memberships, low cost dining and in certain instances housing is provided for the employee and family. Of course the greatest benefit of U.S. foreign service is the opportunity for world travel.
