Beat the High Price of Gas!
Gas prices have been increasing for…well, forever, but the recent spike really started in about 2004 or thereabouts. At that time part of my job responsibilities was the purchase of bulk fuel so I was constantly tuned in to fuel prices and the subtle peaks and valleys of the price graph. A benefit of that knowledge was that I knew what the local retailers were paying and I knew when a price hike was coming at the pump. Armed with this knowledge I would often fill my 40 gallon tank right before a price hike.
To go from being that tuned in to fuel prices to not caring at all wasn’t a conscious effort but rather a result of my adoption of the lifestyle of a nomad. My current job is still very closely tied to fuel. Here at the South Pole the generation of our electricity consumes about 50 gallons of fuel per hour that you can bet costs a great deal more than that which you are putting in your car.
This is but one benefit of being a contract worker in a remote location. The other benefits include paid housing (not going to lose my house in a foreclosure), free food (not directly affected by the recent price spike in food either), and at least one free round-trip ticket to New Zealand each year.
There are other overseas jobs and even domestic ones which offer this same type of insulation from rising costs and a pretty good income to boot. Visit our Jobs Forum to learn more. See our how to get a job in Antarctica article for specific information on employment in Antarctica.
