Looking ahead at working in a foreign country for at least a full year I am very excited about the language. It’s kind of a ‘bucket list’ item of mine to become conversationally fluent in a foreign language. I’m certain that I have a capacity to learn other languages. During my forays into Spanish speaking countries I have picked up quite a bit and have gone past “survival skills” to “basic conversational fluency”. I really would like to go beyond basic conversation though. To communicate humor, feelings, etc is what I strive for.

There are several languages spoken in Taiwan, due to various historical occupations as well as indigenous languages that have somehow survived. The official language of Taiwan, however, is Mandarin Chinese.

Mandarin Chinese is a tonal language. A few weeks ago I didn’t really have a firm grasp on what that meant, exactly, but alas, the Lonely Planet guide to Taiwan has come to build my understanding. From the guidebook:

by altering the voice’s pitch within a syllable, the meaning of a word is completely changed. Getting your tones wrong can have embarrassing consequences – wǒ gǎnmào, for example, means ‘I’ve caught a cold’, while wǒ gàn māo means ‘I copulate with cats’!

Here kitty kitty

I’ve managed to actually figure out what each of the different types of accent marks indicate as far as intonation are concerned. Baby steps.

Yes. I’m in absolute awe [ >> more ]

Vagabumming in Asia perchance?

Yes. I’m in absolute awe at the possibilities that life has presented me. I mean, I’ve had it pretty good for a long time, but I’ve really found myself appreciating that fact for the past year and a half or so. I’m so completely blissed out for such long periods of time that sometimes I begin to worry that I’m manic. But no, no mania here, I’ve just been blessed with a wonderful life.

So, this fact that life is wonderful, I’ve found, can’t be taken as a small piece. It can’t be isolated from the rest of my life. That’s to say that decisions that I’ve made and actions that I’ve taken all came together to put me exactly where I am right now at this very moment. While there have certainly been rough patches in the past; and I often think that if I would have known then what I know now that I would have done things differently, well, I think I’ve abandoned that line of thinking too. All of those events that I may have resented before have contributed to my current state and I am unwilling to give this up, regardless of what any alternate past may have produced.

Right about now, you’re wondering, “what the hell, Will, what are these possibilities you speak of and why all the introspection?” Well, wow, where to start? As you likely know, I’ve been doing contract work in Antarctica for the past six years or so. I’ve done some amazing things, including spending a winter at The South Pole, a winter at Palmer Station and several seasons at McMurdo Station as well as visiting quite a selection of field camps and research sites on the continent of Antarctica. I can remember, very clearly, how completely overjoyed I was when I the possibility of working in Antarctica was first presented to me. Something that I hadn’t ever even considered before, something that was far beyond my wildest dreams ended up becoming a reality and is now a huge part of who I am. I remember last winter at Palmer Station when, for just a moment, my mind was able to really grasp how utterly privileged I was to be doing what I was doing and getting paid for it. Sailing INSIDE a volcanic caldera who gets to do that at their job? I never thought I would, that’s for sure.

Now, if the job itself isn’t special enough, what about the time off and travel? During my long periods of time off I have been privileged to surf in Mexico, ski in Canada, Wyoming, Colorado, France, Norway and even Kashmir. I’ve seen what is surely one of the most macabre churches in the world, traveled all over central Europe by rail, visited the lochs of Scotland, gazed upon Big Ben, communed with nature at Machu Picchu, been amazed at the passion exhibited by Tango dancers in Buenos Aires, stood in awe at the power of nature at Iguazu Falls, been fascinated by the remnants of an ancient society at Easter Island, surfed in Ecuador and found a home (of sorts) in Hawaii.

I was all set to try and get myself hired to go on an overland traverse on Antarctica for this upcoming season. Yes, 80 days of staring through a windshield at barren, flat white, eating T.V. dinners and pooping in a bucket sounded very appealing to me, like a grand adventure even. But alas, the universe has thrown something even more exciting in my direction. So, it looks like I’m taking at least a one-year hiatus from The Ice.

What’s Next Then?

Well, I pursued and have been offered a position in Taiwan. I’m not entirely comfortable posting much detail here, but the position is at least related to the same type of work I’ve been doing and is almost exactly what I was doing in Korea (if you knew me in those days think BIG TRUCK!!).

So, there you have it. Brand new adventure coming up and I expect to post more details about my upcoming move as they become available to me. For now, if you’re interested in the exact location you can see it on a map here: Kaohsiung (pronounced “COW-shung”). If you haven’t already, might I suggest you subscribe via RSS or you can even get email updates. Both of these services are free, don’t include any advertising and are a great way to keep up to date with what I have posted.

P.S.
I am SO looking forward to taking a surfboard with me to my next job!

With mere weeks to go on my current contract position in Antarctica, my future plans are still pretty much in limbo. I’m really ready for some time off and travel. The thought of coming back to the states doesn’t hold too much appeal. The political kvetching, the dismal economy – I can stomach these things but knowing that I’ll have to eventually face the hideous reality of things that just don’t work and end up sucking huge chunks of time – that’s what I dread the most.

As I was trying to get more in touch with why I feel this way, I was reminded of the story of the Red Box. If you’re in the U.S. you’ve likely seen, or even used one of these at the supermarket or fast food establishment. It’s called “Red Box” and it’s a little automated video rental kiosk. The concept is really pretty neat – you swipe a credit card, rent a new release movie for…I dunno, I think $1/day. You can return the DVD to any Red Box anywhere! Yep, seems pretty neat. And cheap! So, the last time I was back in the U.S. I rented a movie from one of these things. All went well with the rental but when I tried to return it, the machine was on the fritz….stuck in some sort of infinite computer loop or something. I was actually standing in line behind another person for quite some time. I just figured the guy was a luddite and couldn’t figure out the overly complex task of inserting an object in a slot, but alas, it wasn’t him, it was the stupid machine – just sitting there, not doing anything. He finally gave up and when I stepped up to the machine it was displaying some sort of error message. I found the manager of the fast food establishment and asked for help. My rudimentary Espanol skills tell me that he was trying to inform me that it wasn’t his problem – the machine didn’t belong to the restaurant and that in order for my problem to be resolved I would be required to speak to some cretin in Bangladesh or Tallahassee. I called, I was put through a series of voice prompts that resulted in yet another infinite loop. No matter what I said I was always met with a response of “oh, so you’d like to become a member” or “did you say you’d like to make a payment?”. Yes, seriously. This went on for what seemed like forever. Finally, through some sort of incomprehensible electronic sorcery, my call was routed to a never-ending queue to speak with a real live human being. The music that was looped in between assurances that my call “is very important” caused my ears such pain that I prayed that Lawrence Welk’s orchestra would appear and those goofy tap dancers from his show would ram the heels of their stupid little tap shoes so deep into my ears that I would be relieved of hearing such atrocities for eternity. No such luck, only more nerve-racking music that Satan himself must have orchestrated in a bid to drive normal people into homicidal rages.

After being on hold for something like 6,546 days, I was finally connected to a real human who, surprisingly, happened to be extraordinarily congenial and was able to tell me that their systems had crashed or something and that I would have to wait to return my DVD and that the system would automagically know that I wasn’t able to return it on time and, furthermore, I wouldn’t be charged for the “extra” day. I was quite relieved by this news but at the same time my level of annoyance had gotten really out of hand. Even if I figured that my time was worth minimum wage, I could have just purchased the DVD and been better off economically than to have spent the time I spent trying to turn the stupid thing back in…and that’s only counting the time at the kiosk and on the phone and no time driving back and forth from the stupid thing.

Now, to most people dealing with this type of thing on a daily basis an experience like this surely seems quotidian but to me who has become accustomed to problem resolution being done in a very personal manner and quite timely…well, this experience became another huge frustration and an unbearable vexation and representative of everything I seem to come to Antarctica to avoid. Seriously, my biggest frustration here is when the coffee runs out and as amped up as I get about things like that, the resolution is so completely simple and easily managed that I feel fortunate to not have to deal with impersonal solutions to problems.

Enjoy your Red Box DVD kiosk, your ATMs, your self-checkout, drive-through banking and dining where something ALWAYS goes amiss. Bask in the glory of 64 channels of shit – several of which seem to have some screaming jack ass purporting to be reporting the news. Enjoy all of those modern “conveniences”. I think I’m going to go to some unknown beach that barely has electricity and where “agua caliente” as an amenity isn’t something you can take for granted and is a selling point at some (but not all) lodging. I’m going to the beach to live the “sandal life”.

As I can see the end of this season on [ >> more ]

As I can see the end of this season on the horizon, my thoughts turn to “what’s next?” The last season that I worked on The Ice, I had the next 12 months of my life planned out to the last detail. Planning ahead didn’t work out so well for me. I ended up blowing off at least two plane tickets that I had purchased. One plane ticket that I had, I ended up changing so many times that it ended up costing me nearly twice as much as the original flight and then I was offered, and accepted, the position that I am now in; effectively canceling out any and all of my travel plans, but giving me the financial resources to have one hell of a good time in Hawaii – funny how compressing a one-year budget down to a couple of months can really enhance the fun factor. Nonetheless, as the end of this season nears, I feel obligated to make some sort of a plan for myself and have come dangerously close to purchasing plane tickets.

The Options:

Work some middle-east contract

Judging by the traffic in my email inbox, many defense contracts have been either awarded or have received continuing funding. I can’t recall any time where I have seen such a large number of employment solicitations in my inbox. All of the major players are represented and an even larger number of staffing firms. I have been in contact with a number of people from a number of companies who all want to hire me. Does a lot of good for my self-esteem, but I’ve got a bit of a timing problem, as all of these positions need to be filled immediately – they’re all looking for people who can start right away i.e. have all of their paperwork processed and be in whatever country when the fiscal year begins.

I’ve been curious about working one of these contracts for quite some time and with the superior pay that these positions come with I could easily finance a condo on Waikiki without committing for too much time. Certainly worth considering.

Another Ice Job

It’s safe to assume that there’s a position available for me back on the other side of the continent. There are several upsides to pursuing one of those positions, not the least of which is a company-paid round-trip ticket to New Zealand and more free food and cheap beer. The chance to see what happens next has a very strong appeal and another good reason to consider working in Antarctica for yet another season.

Other Overseas Jobs

There are a plethora of job opportunities for someone with my skill set. I have investigated many job opportunities on small islands throughout the Pacific and Caribbean. The most appealing one that I came across was a Chief Mechanic position on a private resort island in Belize. I was extremely interested in this position, but they were looking for a couple and Marsha wasn’t as thrilled about the job (for her, some hideous accounting job) as I. Meh…

Travel

Taking time off and traveling are the most appealing options. At the end of this contract, I will be given yet another free Antarctic cruise with disembarkation at Punta Arenas, Chile, from there I have a company-paid plane ticket all the way back to Wyoming. This ticket is about as flexible as I need it to be, and with time and money I figure I could see and do a lot in South America. Galapagos, Easter Island, Igauzu Falls, Machu Picchu, Chan Chan, The Amazon – these are all places that have a certain appeal to me and most of them are on my “to-do” list.

Ahhh…the burden of choice

So, what will it be then? Well, because, as Marsha says, “God laughs as we’re making plans”, I really have no plan at this point, I’m totally uncommitted to anything and open to whatever comes my way. The biggest challenge for me is to stave off the temptation to purchase a plane ticket and just allow things to unfold. Stay tuned for…well, something.

On one of the last days of July we, at Palmer Station, were treated to a stunningly gorgeous sunrise. We had nacreous clouds in the sky a few degrees above the horizon line and as the sun rose that morning it reflected off of them with an orange and pink brilliance that is indescribable. I captured 38 minutes of this glorious sunrise on video, but the image quality of the resultant footage was disappointingly soft. I came up with a creative idea the other day and decided to use the footage of that sunrise in the project.

The result – perhaps a bit creepy, perhaps not…it was a fun project. Here’s a 2-minute version of a 38-minute sunrise “through my eye” What do you think?

‘course now that it’s done I think about all kinds of ways I could have pushed it in other ways…

My first trip to anywhere that was considered the least bit sketchy was to Mexico. Now, growing up in the U.S. I don’t believe that I was alone in hearing about how violent and corrupt our neighbors to the south were. I think I grew up with a lot of misconceptions about a lot of things actually…but I digress. I was a bit apprehensive about actually going to Mexico…but not so much as to not go. I wasn’t going to to Acapulco or Cancun or any of the special white man resorts, mind you, I was going to the regular Mexico – the one with Mexicans and chicken buses and stray, starving dogs and and roosters crowing and trash blowing and everything.

Before going there, I even looked at the U.S. State Dept. travel advisories for Mexico and there were general warnings about most of the country but nothing specific. The ONLY specific warning was about the EXACT place I would be going – the warning had something to do with violence towards Americans on Zicatela Beach – I think it warned to stay off the beach at night. My apprehension was ratcheted up a few notches but…the tickets were booked at that point and deposits had been made….I was taking the trip.

Zicatela Beach and the entire town of Puerto Escondido on Oaxaca’s Pacific coast turned out to be wonderful (constantly crowing roosters and starving dogs aside) – the people there were friendly and helpful and I managed to stay there AND travel through the interior of Mexico on various buses and vans and taxis and never once was I mugged or stabbed or even pickpocketed (though I was, on a couple of occasions, propositioned to buy drugs…declined though….kept having movie flashback moments of Mexican prisons and tried to avoid even talking to these characters). Anyhow, the point here is, that in Mexico and everywhere else I’ve ever been in the world, people go to a certain place to live for pretty much the same reasons that people would go live in say…Des Moines, IA… They wish to make a life for themselves and their families, they wish to do so honorably and they don’t want to live in a crime riddled neighborhood. Yep, people are people no matter where in the world you go. Just like in Des Moines there will be bad elements in cities and towns across the world, but there is absolutely no place that is sitting, waiting for you to show up so that they can rob you blind and throw you out naked and bleeding.

So why the rant….well, hopefully, more people can relate to the place in this video that is being called a “cesspool of corruption” and a “mess”. If you’ve ever been to Amsterdam, I would think that you would agree that it is anything but a cesspool.

The gospel of Rupert Murdoch is baseless sensationalism.

Last Friday the OSAR team participated in a training exercise. Temperatures here have dropped a bit – I think somewhere in the high teens, possibly lower 20s. Those temperatures really aren’t much of a consideration when around station; not much bundling up is required when shelter is never further than a few short steps away, and in fact, the buildings of station provide a significant windbreak. Out on the open water, however, can be quite a different story. There was a light breeze blowing in the morning with a tad bit of snowfall. I was braced for a day full of misery.

My anticipation of misery caused me to prepare for the worst – I dressed right and fared well during the exercise. It turned out to be quite an enjoyable day actually. Presently there are lots of icebergs out and about and an escape from the constant drone of the diesel generator on station was welcome.

Here we are in the boat – approaching a hairball landing. The intention, I guess, was to boost confidence in one’s abilities to actually land a boat in big swells and go ashore over snowy, ice-encrusted cliffs. As it turns out, the proper motivation needed to scale up an icy rock is 20 feet of ice cold water below it.

This season, instead of having nothing new to write about, I’m keeping so busy with both work and other projects that I’m very easily distracted from writing much. I always think it’s neat to see Antarctica from other peoples’ perspectives – here’s a few links to other people who maintain Antarctica related blogs:

First, our local big-time celebrity (he made an appearance on Oprah!) and self-proclaimed action-nerd – see what Payot is up to

See Antarctica through fresh eyes – Jeff writes about his first deployment to Antarctica

Easily my favorite person on the entire continent – Marsha made it down for the second half of the Palmer winter.

See Palmer through Sean’s lens

Ice veteran Craig spent the first half of the Palmer winter with us. Read his take on it and other commentary on Antarctica and other places at Travelin’ with the Rev (He got a priest’s license from an ad in the back of Rolling Stone or something…)

Genevieve at The South Pole

Ken at McMurdo

Krissie spends the winter at The South Pole

Without a doubt, at any remote location, and even more so during an Antarctic winter, food is the driving force behind morale. The kitchen staff at any Antarctic research station have one of the toughest jobs – take an intimate look at how one of them keeps it all together at Harriett’s Tomato.

Lee is at McMurdo for the winter

So, here’s a guy who actually does keep up with his blog and has a gift for writing. I’ve been following it since he got to the ice, followed along as he made the decision to extend his summer job into a winter over contract…. check it out at Drowning in Miscellany

A couple of other Antarctic related sites:
The (un)official Palmer Station site
