Bonding With a Whole New Group…

Written by Will on . Posted in Expat Life, Lore, Legend & Stories, Nomadic Lifestyle, Working and Living in Antarctica

That’s what this whole stupid Antarctica polar plunge thing is about…bonding with the people you’re spending time here with. That and saying goodbye to friends. Sometimes I think it would be less painful to just start hating them right away than to go through this most stupid-of-all ritual. Alas, I jumped anyhow. Hopefully this is the last time. Next time, these people will be jumping for me! Three weeks and counting.

A Winter Season – Bookended by a Big Orange Boat

Written by Will on . Posted in Expat Life, Working and Living in Antarctica

On September 24th our winter season officially came to a close. The silence of winter was broken with the call for “Line handlers to the pier”. For the past ~3 months the 16 of us have been isolated on our tiny island. The boat that took friends away has brought friends back. It also brought freshies. Hopefully it hasn’t brought swine flu or zombies. Here’s a compilation of video clips – scenes from when the last boat left until it arrived once again.

The Colors of Palmer Station

Written by Will on . Posted in General, Global Travel, Nomadic Lifestyle, Travel, Working and Living in Antarctica

The scenery here is definitely worth the price of admission. Hopefully you haven’t gotten sick of me posting videos of sunrises/sunsets and icebergs because here’s another one. Wildlife should be returning soon and hopefully I’ll get a chance to get some more video with seals and penguins and stuff.

Nacreous Sunrise

Written by Will on . Posted in General, Working and Living in Antarctica

On one of the last days of July we, at Palmer Station, were treated to a stunningly gorgeous sunrise. We had nacreous clouds in the sky a few degrees above the horizon line and as the sun rose that morning it reflected off of them with an orange and pink brilliance that is indescribable. I captured 38 minutes of this glorious sunrise on video, but the image quality of the resultant footage was disappointingly soft. I came up with a creative idea the other day and decided to use the footage of that sunrise in the project.

The result – perhaps a bit creepy, perhaps not…it was a fun project. Here’s a 2-minute version of a 38-minute sunrise “through my eye” What do you think?

‘course now that it’s done I think about all kinds of ways I could have pushed it in other ways…
