Travel Destination: New Zealand

Nomadic Lifestyle

Probably the best benefit of jobs in Antarctica is the free round trip ticket for travel to New Zealand. Granted the trip is a long-haul flight from Los Angeles, but once you get there, it becomes very clear that the hellish flight was worth it.

The first thing that one will notice when they travel to New Zealand is the people. The kiwi people are, for the most part, exceptionally warm and welcoming. Life moves at a much less frantic pace in New Zealand when compared to many parts of the U.S. I attribute this to the lack of big box stores and discount chains. There are also fewer 24-hour convenience stores – far fewer 24-hour stores of any kind. The focus isn’t on consumption in this charming island nation.

Probably the second most noteworthy thing will be noticed about New Zealand is the breathtaking natural beauty. From the rugged west coast of the south island to the snow-capped peaks of the southern alps to the beautiful beaches or the fjords or the volcanoes on the north island…the entire country is simply gorgeous.

New Zealand’s history is as interesting as it people and natural beauty. It is often thought of as the most recently settled landmass. This is likely due to its relative geographic isolation, though not as isolated as Rapa Nui…it is still a long way from anywhere. Of particular interest is the Treaty of Waitangi. When the Europeans (specifically the British) sought to settle New Zealand, rather than going in and killing the Māori people (indigenous New Zealanders) the British instead drafted a treaty and with the exception of wrangling over the actual meaning of the treaty, have upheld its spirit since signing in 1840. This is remarkable considering the slaughter of other indigenous peoples in other parts of the world in the name of expansion of the empire.

Over the next few weeks watch for articles that deal with specific activities and areas in New Zealand. Until then, check out this article on a quirky hotel that defines many of the wonderful things about travel in New Zealand.
