I see filing cabinets for doughy mid-westerners and their screaming children in the midst of an otherwise beautiful tropical paradise. Is one of these hideous buildings filled with surly service staff really where you want to spend your vacation? At the rates that hotels are charging these days, I’d rather have an experience that I will remember than to stay in some soulless concrete pillar with all the character of a sea slug.

These travel articles on unique hotels of the world are intended to highlight some of the most unique lodging worldwide. The word “hotel” is being used here to encompass all manner of lodging – from back country yurts, rural cabooses, remote lodges, caves, treehouses and anything and everything else. The focus is on character and uniqueness, cost or nightly rates are of secondary concern but lodging with exorbitant costs probably won’t make the list here.
