About Unusual Hotels of The World

Opening soon at the Arlanda-Stockholm Sweden Airport is this 747 jumbo jet that is being converted into a 25 room hostel. The project is the vision of Swedish Hotelier Oscar Dios. Dios purchased the retired aircraft in 2006 after convincing local authorities to allow him to park it at the entrance to the airport where it will be anchored to concrete. The challenging task of converting the plane into a hotel then began. The seats were removed, the fuselage was rewired and plumbing installed. A climate control system was installed as as a measure to prevent individual rooms from becoming too stuffy due to windows that do not open.

While being touted as a budget accommodation, the rooms in the main cabin are built for three adults, are six square meters in size and will fetch a premium of $150 per night. It sounds to me like Mr. Dios may be slightly out of touch with what a budget traveler requires. The only real hostel-ish feature is shared community toilets/showers in the corridor. For the traveler who requires more luxury premium rooms are available on the upper deck. These rooms come with their own shower and toilet facilities. The penthouse equivalent is the cockpit suite. For $700 per night guests can enjoy deluxe accommodation in the plane’s former cockpit where some of the original interior has been preserved to maintain the feel of being on an airplane. The cockpit suite also boasts the best views of the nearby airport and its traffic.

For my travel dollar, if I’m going to spend $700 and sleep on an airplane, I’d damn sure better wake up someplace other than where I fell asleep. For more information on the Jumbo Hostel, visit their website.

Seriously, for that price, I expect a little more than crowded quarters.
