Looking for a different type of experience while you are traveling the world? If you find yourself in Austria, give Das Park Hotel a try. This unique hotel introduces two very interesting concepts. Firstly, the accommodation itself is in “repurposed” (I had never heard that term before…I like it) concrete drain pipes. And the second fresh concept is a “pay as much as you wish” payment structure.

The “hotel” gets most of its amenities – sanitation, food service etc from surrounding public infrastructure and the rooms themselves would otherwise be left to decay in the weeds alongside the road or retired to a landfill somewhere, the cost to run the hotel is very low, therefore the pay as you wish model will probably work well and I imagine could even become quite profitable. Hotel guests are simply asked to leave an amount in Euros that they see fit to support this project paying what they wish to or can afford.

Upon making a reservation or booking one of these sewer pipe rooms guests are given a keycode for the door that will only be good for the duration of the reserved stay. Personal items are therefore secure in the room. Electricity is provided in the pipe rooms for the convenience of guests, as are double beds, luggage storage, lamps, wooly blankets and light cotton sleeping bags.

Reservations are accepted anytime but the hotel currently only operates from May through October, as, I assume, the units aren’t heated and wouldn’t be very comfortable during much of the winter. For a different travel experience, check out Das Park Hotel.
