Unusual Hotels of the World: The Harlingen Harbour Crane – Netherlands
About Unusual Hotels of The World
Get convicted of murder, you could wind up being sentenced to death. Get convicted of killing a whole race of people, you’ll be sentenced to…The Netherlands. You don’t, however, have to be a convicted war criminal to spend time in luxe accommodations in Holland. This week’s unusual hotels article features something seldom if ever seen elsewhere in the world, a crane that was formerly used to load and unload cargo from ships sailing the Wadden Sea and was converted into a Bed and Breakfast.
The restoration and conversion of the crane took a team devoted history fanatics two years to complete. If you decide to stay here, you will be very pleased with their efforts as the turret is functional and you can spin the crane to change the view at you leisure!
The crane is equipped with many amenities that you would expect in a regular hotel. A bed with panoramic view, “unconventional” sanitary facilities, a mini-bar, climate control, audio/video electronics, armchairs and a rooftop patio. The nearby town of Harlingen provides any other necessities you may need. The crane’s original stairs and ladders have been replaced with elevators for convenient access to your temporary quarters.
In a quick pass through the hotel’s online Dutch language guestbook I was able to pick out words like fantastic and super, a dream come true that prior guests have used to describe their stay at the Harlingen Harbor Crane Hotel.
A one night stay in this unique lodging is currently priced at nearly $490 USD so it certainly doesn’t qualify as budget accommodation but it may well be worth it if, while traveling the world, you need a break from hostels and would enjoy a night in your own personal space. This B&B provides solitude and a one-of-a-kind experience. To learn more, visit the hotel’s website.
